Avulsions

Physiotherapy_edited.jpg

What are Avulsions?

Avulsions are severe traumatic injuries in which one or more pieces of tissue are torn and detached from the body, including at least all three layers of skin.

What Causes Avulsions?

Often an avulsion fracture occurs when there is a sudden forceful pull on a tendon while the bone is moving in the opposite direction. An example is an injury to the fifth metatarsal, the bone on the outside of the midfoot. The peroneal tendon attaches to the base of this bone.

Treatments for Avulsions

  • resting the affected area

  • applying ice packs

  • doing exercises to strengthen muscles, improve movement, and help the bone heal
